One of my very favorite parts of working with Target as their Mommy Ambassador is being part of the Target School Library Makeover program. Last week, I got to spend time with the incredible kids at PS 148 in Queens, New York as Target unveiled their school’s awesome new library. Education and learning should be part of everyone’s lives, and it’s so important that these kids have books right at their fingertips. Seeing their excited faces and being part of such an inspiring day was amazing!
The Target School Library Makeover program is part of Target’s commitment to helping more children learn to read proficiently by the end of third grade. As a result of programs like this, Target is on track to give $1 billion for education by the end of 2015.
The Target School Library Makeover program nurtures a love of reading by creating an inspiring space for children to learn and grow. Additionally, the program puts more books into the hands of children to address one of the biggest factors affecting literacy – access to books.
Each remodeled library features 2,000 new books, furniture, carpet and shelves, and a complete technology upgrade, including new iPads. After the unveiling, each student takes home seven books to kick start their own personal library at home.
Since the start of the Target School Library Makeover program, Target has transformed 175 school libraries across the country. I’m so proud to be a part of this program that is truly changing lives one school at a time, and I can’t wait for the next one!
