What you will need:

Wood or particle board clipboard

Chalkboard paint (available at hardware or home improvement stores)

Paintbrush

Painter’s tape

Chalk

Newspaper or paper towels to protect your workspace

Instructions:

Step 1: Mark off the top section of your clipboard with painter’s tape (this section will remain unpainted.)

Step 2: Paint the remaining clipboard with chalkboard paint (you might need several coats, depending on the material of your clipboard.) Allow paint to dry.

Step 3: Peel away the painter’s tape.

Step 4: Take your chalk and scribble away!

DIY Guitar

We’re celebrating all things pop star this week at Moonfrye! This simple, rustic DIY guitar craft is guaranteed to spark your budding musician’s imagination…let the jam sessions begin!

What you will need:

Bamboo plates (available at Whole Foods, Sur La Table or Amazon.com)

Craft balsa wood (our piece was cut to 3″ X 24″)

Pencil

Exacto knife (adults only, please)

Popsicle sticks

Rubber bands

Black paint

Paintbrushes

Glue

Instructions:

Step 1: Pencil in the outline for the base of your guitar as shown.

Step 2: Using an Exacto knife, cut out your guitar base shape.

Step 3: Glue a plate to the end of your guitar base.

Step 4: Glue three popsicle sticks onto the neck of your guitar as shown to create “tuning keys.”

Step 5: Paint frets and position markers on the neck of your guitar as shown.

Step 6: Attach four rubber bands to the bamboo plate as shown to create your guitar’s strings.

DIY Microphone

Cardboard paper towel roll inserts (one per microphone)

Styrofoam balls

Grey and black paint

Paintbrushes

Star confetti

Clear craft glue

Hot glue gun

Instructions:

Step 1: Paint the cardboard tubes black and allow to dry.

Step 2: Paint the styrofoam balls grey and allow to dry.

Step 3: Apply a thin layer of glue to the outside of the painted tube and sprinkle with the star confetti.

Step 4: Using the glue gun, attach the styrofoam ball to the painted tube as shown.

DIY Stained Wood Picture Frames

Holiday season is literally right around the corner, and we are getting excited about gift giving in my house. My girls love to give gifts to make our friends and family feel special and help them know how much we treasure them. Our very favorite kind of gifts are the homemade kind, like these DIY stained wood picture frames. It’s a great way to preserve a memory and create a one-of-a-kind present that will be cherished for years to come.

What you will need:

Unfinished wood picture frames (available at craft and hobby stores)

Photographs

Wood stain

Paintbrush

Washi tape

Baker’s twine

Instructions:

Step 1: Apply paint stain to your frame with a paintbrush.

Step 2: With a paper towel, gently wipe away excess stain to create a grained look for your frame.

Step 3: Allow the stain to dry, then get creative with washi tape decoration!

Step 4: Using baker’s twine and strips of washi tape, you can create a miniature pennant to decorate the top of your frame.

Moon Craft

Our celebration of all things space continues this week on Moonfrye! The moon is so magical…there’s nothing like staring up into the night sky to see the moon rising. With our easy DIY moon craft, you can bring a little lunar magic into your house without needing to wait for the sun to set. Super easy, messy and fun…we love this craft to the moon and back!

What you will need:

White glue (you’ll need the whole bottle)

1 1/2 cups shaving cream

Scissors

Thick cardboard (the side of a cardboard shipping box works great.)

Pencil

Needle

Thread

Mixing bowl

Spoon

Instructions:

Step 1: Pour glue into the mixing bowl.

Step 2: Add shaving cream and stir, mixing well.

Step 3: Using your fingers, spread mixture over your piece of cardboard and allow to dry.

Step 4: Cut out whatever moon shape you want (crescent, half, full, etc.) with scissors.

Step 5: With a threaded needle, pierce a whole at the top of your moon and bring thread through, tying into a loop.

Step 6: Your moon craft is complete! Hang somewhere special and enjoy!

Chanukah Menorah

We love this pretty, simple and recycled craft…just in time for the Festival of Lights! Your family will love repurposing old toys to create this beautiful Chanukah menorah. It’s guaranteed to be a treasured holiday favorite for years to come!

What you will need:

9 wood blocks for each menorah you’d like to make (the ones we used had holes already, but you can use a drill or a hammer and nail to make your own holes if you need to)

Birthday candles

White and blue paint

Paint brushes

Instructions:

Step 1: Paint the face of your first block white.

Step 2: With each subsequent block, add a little bit of blue paint, getting darker as you go.

Step 3: Allow paint to dry for at least 30 minutes, then arrange blocks into a line and add candles.

Cardboard Spaceship

Ever since I was a kid I dreamed of being an astronaut. So I couldn’t be happier that we’re celebrating outer space this week on Moonfrye! Our super easy cardboard spaceship is the perfect way to plan a pretend visit to the stars. Or invite friends over for a rocket launch party!

What you will need:

Empty cardboard toilet paper rolls

Construction paper

Red and silver glitter

Blue sparkle paint (ours is Kid Made Modern, available at Target)

Paintbrush

Scissors

Glue

Aluminum foil

Red crepe paper

Instructions:

Step 1: Paint each toilet paper roll with two coats of glitter paint.

Step 2: Cut a circle out of the construction paper, roughly 3″ in diameter.

Step 3: Cut into the center of the circle, then fold one edge over the other to create a cone and glue in place.

Step 4: Paint the rim of the cardboard roll with glue and attach the paper cone.

Step 5: Cut 1″ inch strips of aluminum foil and wrap around the base of the tube, using a dab of glue to secure.

Step 6: Cut crepe paper into thin strips to create “flames” for your cardboard spaceship. Glue into the open end of the tube.

Step 6: Paint the paper cone with glue and sprinkle red and silver glitter on top.

8 Days of Chanukah

8 small bags (we used canvas, burlap, brown lunch bags and paper gift bags)

Twine

Clothespins

Number stamps

Ink pad

Chanukah goodies: chocolate gelt, confetti, dreidels, etc.

Instructions:

Step 1: Stamp the numbers 1-8 on your bags, alternating types of bag (they look great hanging when you vary them!)

Step 2: Fill each bag with your Chanukah-themed goodies.

Step 3: String up a length of twine.

Step 4: Fold down the tops of each bag and attach to the twine with clothespins. Each night, let your little ones take down a bag and enjoy!
