It’s that time of year…we are slowly starting to shift from fun in the sun to ABCs and 123s in my house. Getting back into the school groove gave us the idea for this DIY Cardboard Abacus craft. With just cardboard, yarn and colorful beads you can create a learning tool that’s as pretty to look at as it is fun to use!
What you will need:
Colored plastic beads
Step 1: Start with a rectangular piece of cardboard (recycled box flaps work great.) Using scissors and holding the cardboard vertically, make seven notches on each side, about an inch apart.
Step 2: Measure seven lengths of yarn, making sure you have enough to wrap around the cardboard and tie into a knot at the back.
Step 3: Thread two beads onto the first length of yarn and place across the front side of the cardboard.
Step 4: Slip the ends of the yarn through the first set of notches and flip the cardboard over to secure.
Step 5: Repeat with additional lengths of yarn, tying one more bead each time.
Step 6: Count away!
